  1. the only thing i could think of to do that doesn’t involve welding is trying to affix a plastic cable guide to the bottom of the shell and running the cables over that. not sure how you’d attach it (i seem to recall i had to do this to an old falcon of mine but for the life of me i can’t remember how i did it. i may have just slapped it on and relied on the cables themselves to keep it in place). you could also try running the cables through some housing liner and replacing those as they wear out (they’ll get chewed through before any steel does), but it’ll be tricky keeping them in place, they’ll want to slide up out of tension.

    on the other hand, this much damage has taken, what, like 40-50 years to accumulate? so it’s not like failure is imminent…

    It’s fine, the grooves are cast in the bb shell like that. Clean up the loose rust and grit and the rest of the frame will wear out long before a polished cable running on smooth steel will pose any sort of problem.
