I have a bunch of black looking sludge coming from my forks. It looks like it shot through the top of it too, where the lock and opening for the forks are. I’ve had them for a while. Am I still good to take it riding? Or are they just really dirty? Also its not so much the otherside either. Just this one side.

It seems that the seals are bust. A bit hard to tell but the stanchions also don’t look very healthy. If that is the case I would not spend money on this fork but look at a replacement instead. Check if the surface underneath that black stuff is nice and shiny without any visible markings of wear.
Spring forks can take a lot of abuse. But they still benefit from service. There are plenty of videos on YouTube. If it’s an option, an air fork is worlds better and lighter.
Thanks, yeah ive had this bike some years now. I do love it. Ill probably just get a new/better fork for it eventually.
I’d just keep riding and when you’re ready to replace, find a used Judy or Recon on Pinkbike Buy/Sell. They often go for $100 or less.
