The current “snow storm” in the southeast gave me the perfect excuse to take a few quick shots of the current state of this project and finally make a post about it.
The story:
This summer as I was getting into fixing bicycles and being inspired by the styles shown in this sub I eagerly snatched up this 1994 lava dome from my local co-op as a perfect base. But that grey blue paint…such a let down for something named after LAVA! So after a ton of research and several rewatchings of etoe’s video on a monster energy inspired bike frame I picked up some Montana cans and went to town on this one.
After the 2k clear was cured (in like 1 day, that stuff is amazing!) I put it together and took some pictures on the shakedown run. No, I didn’t even trim the zip ties on the top tube at that point, but it worked!
At that point I didn’t love the old school position so I decided to go for an mtbmx look instead and eventually threw a cheap rack on it after cutting some brackets from playground braces so I could haul my 6y/o kid’s backpack to school for him and that’s how it sits for now. I learned a ton and have enjoyed the hell out of the bike and the process. 10/10 will do this again!

Nice and clean bike. You might want to use this for the rear brake cable.

Great paint work. I assume those were vinyl decals that you just pulled off at the end?
beautiful!! maybe this is a sign to slap some bmx bars on my lava dome!
I was lookin at a low amazon rack like that. Looks good! And omg that paint is insane. Did u have painting experience before? It’s a beaut, the larger crackles at the seatpost going down to the smaller ones, wowee
