Got this bike used a few weeks ago. Sometimes the shifting is weird but not always. Seems to happen on cold days. I have difficulty shifting down but shifting up takes it all the way to the highest gear. This happens whether I am peddling or not. I couldn't find anyone with the same issue so I'm not quite sure where to start.

Feeling stumped on this one. Shimano Alfine shifting issue

  1. Look to see if it’s pulling cable (yellow dot at the hub linkage). I suspect it is the internals of the shifter freezing or not catching vs an actual issue with the hub. I think the internals with grease are pretty decent in cold weather vs the 11s hubs with oil bath.

  2. You have 2 problems:

    1. The sticky pawls in the shifter, as identified by others; and

    2. You also have problems with either excess friction in the cable housing (or cassette joint) or insufficient spring tension in the hub, as we can see the cable housing move away from the shifter when you fully release tension in the shifter. This shouldn’t happen, and it means the cable slack isn’t being taken up at the hub end of the cable.

  3. As other people said. Sticky grease blocking pawl function. Also make sure that once it works again. You make sure not to shift while pedaling. Opposed to derailleur systems. Its better for the hub if you dont. Also check that the 2.yellow lines match up in gear 4
