can anyone help me understand what has happened here and whether there is a non tire replacement solution? i have deflated and checked tube to confirm there is no puncture. much appreciated cheers!
That tyre is dead, the carcass has failed. Replace it before it explodes.

The threads that provide the tensile strength have failed. They run in diagonal layers and one of the layers let go, hence the meandering shape.
Let the air out before it gets loud.

Nothing else to add really. The construction of the tire failed. If the tire isn’t too old you might be able to contact the manufacturer for a warranty replacement.

Belts in the tire are breaking. These belts provide structure to the tire. The only solution is replacement.
By the looks of it this was primarily caused by age.
