I bought a used Trek Farley 5 2020 and it is a blast but one thing I've noticed is that it is extremely loud when cruising / not pedalling, think the term is called freewheeling. The noise is coming from the rear wheel specifically casette but not sure. I will take it to the bike shop tomorrow but want to make sure to ask here first.
It's not clipping anything, can change gears without issue and deraileur is aligned with the chain
Is it normal for farley 5 to make so much noise freewheeling

Is the noise recent ?
Seem like it might be a broken pawls. Can you disassemble the hub and check it. It might just need grease.
That is exactly what mine has always sounded like. It has more engagement points than a “regular” hub so it doesn’t roll back as far before they engage
I can’t tell from the video, but I have stock Bontrager wheels on my Supercaliber and it sounds very similar–kind of like something is rattling in the freehub. I’ve taken it apart and checked it out but seems to work fine. If anything, maybe your freehub needs to be cleaned and regreased. That typically quiets it a bit.
Mine sounds the same since day 1, keep pedalling and it’s quieter 😎
Those bontrager hubs are definitely on the noisy side yeah…
My Farley 9 sounds like this, too. I spun it next to my gravel bike (with way fewer than the 108 engagement points on the Farley) when I first got it, and they are very noticeably different. Both in sound and in engagement upon crank rotation.
That is completely normal, was the same from the day I bought it. I like it loud on my road bike but on a fattie I agree, it’s a tad too much.
I was once fortunate enough to have a Chris King rear hub on one of my bikes and although it was noisy, I always found it to be the sweet sound of a quality hub.
My 2022 Top Fuel 8, 2022 Farley 7, and 2025 Procaliber 9.5 all sound exactly like this. You have the Bontrager Rapid Drive 108 hub. The hub doesn’t always come with 6 pawls installed (sometimes it comes stock with just 3), but when it has all 6 installed that’s what it sounds like. Glorious! 🎵🎶
