Howdy. I'm in the midst of a vintage bike resto-mod; the bike originally came with 27" wheels but I intend to replace with 700c wheels. I may also want another set of 700c wheels for a similar project later on.

There's two wheelsets for sale near me for $180; a set of Mavic Aksium Race and DTSwiss r1800. These both seem to be decent quality, sorta entry-level wheels. Alternatively, I could spend basically the same amount for a brand new Shimano rs-100 wheelset, which similarly appears to be a decent budget wheelset. Of course the condition of the used set will make a big difference, but assuming in good shape, would it make sense to get the used wheels or new wheelset? I'd also be interested in hearing any insight on these particular wheels.

Nothing specific on those wheels, but in general, I would pick up the used ones. Chances are at least one front/rear wheel will be in decent condition.
It’s just the responsible thing to do for the environment.
You could get to know someone in your are, who is as much into cycling as you are as a bonus!
He will be very happy any time he/she sees you rocking his gear!

I am on my second set of Rs100 wheelset, have never had any issues with them over 15,000+ km. Good wheelset for the price, I would highly recommend these.

  3. Aksium are ass. I had ksyrium (one model up) on my first road bike, I have aksium on my gravel. They are heavy, not stiff, not serviceable. I don’t like them.

  4. get the dt wheelset for 100.

the brake track condition suggest these wheels are almost new
