My brand new Trek Checkpoint SL 6 AXS is only 1 month old and this part fell off my bike yesterday while going over a simple curb.

At first I wasn’t even sure it was from my bike because I couldn’t see where it was from.

Apparently it’s a piece that’s supposed to be near the crank.

What does this piece do? Protect the frame or crank or chain?

I’m taking the bike back to the shop to get it fixed because there are some different minor issues as well but I let them know that this shouldn’t be happening for a 4000$ bike.

Do you think it is bad to keep biking without this part?

  1. it’s to Protect the frame
yep take the bike to the shop
safe to ride , but better with the plate

  2. spannerspinner on

Please wash your bike THOROUGHLY before dropping it off at the shop.

Yeah, it’s not ideal. But it’s just the glue that’s failed. Trek are usually really good with warranty claims like this. But I wouldn’t expect a replacement bike.

Did the shop you bought it from offer a first free tune up? Usually after around 6 weeks I ask customers to bring the bike back to sort any small issues like gear setup, all things that can’t be avoided. Within the first few months I’m happy to tune up peoples bikes for free.

  3. The metal plate protects the frame in case of a chainsuck event. Absolutely go to Trek and have it fixed. They will likely just glue it on again, but that is fine.
