For decades, aquarists have relied on a staple food that they never knew was detrimental to the health of their pets, PELLETS 👎🏼 The biggest problem is that the majority of them are filled with carbohydrates and preservatives—definitely not something you want to feed to your lotl ‼️

In other words, many pellets are like the McDonald’s of Axolotl food… and essentially all other aquatic pets 🤦🏻‍♂️

A key factor to consider when it comes to your Axolotl’s diet is their macronutrient intake! Macronutrients can be broken down into three categories:

💪🏼 PROTEINS
🧠 FATS
⚡️ CARBOHYDRATES
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As a carnivorous animal, it is imperative that your Axolotls have a diet rich in protein (a nutrient that most pellets lack)! For our young juveniles, they get black worms! 🐛 Here’s what their macronutrient breakdown looks like:

BLACK WORMS
✅ Protein: 60%
✅ Fat: 20%
✅ Carbs: 20%
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
On the other hand, many pellets have a vastly different macronutrient profile:

PELLETS (most brands):
🚫 Protein: 30%
🚫 Fat: 10%
🚫 Carbs: 60%⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

A high-carbohydrate diet in carnivorous animals can reduce the bioavailability of essential micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) as well as promote excess weight gain and cardiovascular disorders 💔

Although we may not always pay attention to the quality of nutrition that our pets consume, it’s just as important to them as it is for us because like humans, Axolotls can become severely unhealthy when fed the wrong food over time!
