Is the chain still usable on my gravel?

I cleaned the chain with white spirit before waxing it. Beforehand, I removed the worst of the dirt with water and a brush. After the first "wash" with the white spirit, the chain looked like the one in the photo. I had just cleaned the bike before winter and only ridden it once. It looked great before, and now it looks like this. Can anyone explain this?
