Hey guys, a few (about 6) weeks ago I was riding along and I made a pretty critical rookie mistake.

I didn’t roll up my pant leg and when it got caught in the chain it didn’t just tear my pants or slip out. My pants twisted with the crankset, holding my leg firmly against the chainring while my clipped in foot and ankle was forced down and backwards by my full weight and inertia of the bike.

I’ve been on crutches for about a month now and I’ll be going to get an MRI soon as it hasn’t really been healing as quickly as I think it should. (I already went to my family doctor and was told to come back if the pain persisted)

anyways, I rode like a mile today without foot retention cause I’ve been going insane not being able get on the bike. Probably won’t be doing that again any time very soon. If anyone has any advice or has gone through anything similar I’d love to hear it.

I feel like an idiot for ending up in this situation. Roll up your pant legs guys.

Comments questions concerns appreciated.

  1. Gym membership somewhere that has spin bikes helped me get back on my bike. I’m usually there in shorts anyways, and there’s no exposed drivetrain so less worries about catching something. Keep going.

Firstly, sorry to hear you took such a gnarly slam and I hope you recover fully!

I’ve taken some pretty bad hits throughout the years (dropped chains and breaking a wrist, things like that) and it’s always been a mental battle to get back in the saddle. Just take it slow and if you don’t mind, maybe ride with shorts or with leggings that have no chance of catching on the chainring, it will give you peace of mind and you’ll forget about the violence soon enough and you’ll be wiser for it.
