Parts and labor isn’t unrealistic, it’s internally routed so might take a minute. The 60$ bar tape and $35 charge for wrapping them is some horseshit. Buy it and do it yourself. As well as most of this stuff if your halfway competent and can use YouTube you can at least get everything installed and then if you really can’t tune the shifting or brakes go in for a tune up.

  2. it needed new wheels? Rusted or seized spoke nipples? If it was in this condition the bike was likely smoked and needed a strip and rebuild which isn’t cheap at all shop.

Aside from the bar tape and the tubes, this is about how much this stuff costs from a retail store which is an issue in itself. As another commenter has said, couple hours upskilling on YouTube and sourcing these or better parts from known online suppliers who sell at bike shop cost prices (ccache, bike bug/pushys) and you could do all this yourself and save a few hundred dollars at least.

  3. aside from the $95 bar tape – if you’re paying $60 for bar tape they should install it for free – no line item is crazy. but in aggregate it doesn’t make sense to drop that much money on a rim brake bike that fits 25mm tires with an entry level wheelset. you could have sold the old bike and put this money towards a modern bike with disc brakes, thru axles, tire clearance, etc. I’ve paid less than what you’ve paid in repairs for such a bike.

In the shop I’ve recently finished up in, we would’ve bumped you up to our ‘premium’ service rate of $170. But you wouldn’t have paid labour for the bar wrap or the cable install. But hey, that’s probably why myself and the only other employee were made redundant and the owner decided to continue as a one man show.
All the other costs seem on par.

  5. $10 for outer cable of any length it seems, including the short bit by the rear derailleur. Not a bad price, just a bit odd.
