I’m on the edge of the size guide between a small and medium and struggling to decide. I’m looking for comfort and to avoid sore shoulders / neck which I think may be caused my too long a reach. I only ride easy trails, forest paths, gravel roads etc and nothing too technical or steep but hoping to improve. I’ve attached photos from when I tried both sizes. I’m leaning towards the small I think. Appreciate any advice. Particularly whether the small looks too cramped?

Which one is the small

I think I’d go medium, the small does look cramped. The last time I was right on the edge between M/L, I went medium, and I should have sized up. I ended up selling that bike because I couldn’t get comfortable on long rides. The shop should provide a fitting service, did you ask them?
The medium looks to be a better fit but I am sure the small would work fine and probably be more fun. The medium will be more stable offer more confidence but be less maneuverable and nimble.
I am worried about finding a helmet that fits
Either would work and I bet you could get the cockpit to be the same reach with a stem swap.
Have the shop swap stems so the reach measures the same. Ride them around the parking lot standing and pick the one that feels more comfortable.
From another post you say you are 165cm with 77cm inseam. Buy the small, you’ll regret the medium.
