  1. Lots of possible reasons.

    Could be a manufacturing defect, could be damaged to the chain, could be a fracture in that specific link, maybe not enough lube, corrosion…

  2. That happened to the “SRAM” chain I bought on Amazon that probably wasn’t really a SRAM chain. The bad thing is it completely separated, and I was accelerating across a traffic sewer when it did.

    I buy my chains at LBS since.

    Had this happen on an x0 transmission chain, very gentle ride back to the car from the middle of the woods

  4. Once my salty and rusty 11s light chain cracked just a little. One outer plate close to the pin. It was enough for me to notice, because of the sound. I was lucky that it didn’t snap in half, like in your case. You are the luckiest. So close.
