I just got this old Norco Shore 1, and while heavy I love the bike so far for downhill riding, I just don’t understand what the left gear shift does exactly. There’s only one gear in the front. However with the left shifters I can switch between 2 modes, both which feel differently as if I were changing gears.. can anyone explain how this works?

The crank you have is a Sram Truvativ Hammerschmidt. It’s an internal hub geared crank. So it not only feels like two gears it’s two gears. Nice piece you have there. These were only made a short period because of their weight and high complexity. They require a special bottom bracket as well.
