Looks to me like he rode his front brake the whole way down and that undercut at the end stopped his wheel and at the same time compressed the fork sending him over. Hindsight and all but you gotta let it roll on things like this until you get to even ground. Hope your friend is alright, thats a tough lesson to learn.
