I’m having an issue with a MTB wheel that won’t spin freely. When I rotate the axle by hand, it feels like it builds up tension, then clicks and releases, almost like a ratcheting mechanism. The clicking itself feels smooth, not gritty.
At first, the axle nuts were loose. When they’re loose, the axle spins freely. But once I tighten the nuts, this binding/clicking behavior starts and the wheel no longer spins smoothly.
Does this point to a bad or crushed bearing, incorrect axle spacing, or something else (cones too tight, missing spacer, hub issue)? Trying to figure out what’s actually going wrong here before I tear it all apart.
Any insight appreciated 👍

Mountain bike wheel not spinning freely — axle builds tension then clicks/releases

  1. Some shrapnel inside the bearing race caused binding or just a bad bearing or rolling surface? Take it apart man how are we supposed to know?

  2. The cones are too tight. Loosen everything. Then tighten down the cones only until there is no lateral play in the axle, but it still spins freely. Then tighten the lockrings onto the cones, holding the cone with a cone wrench and tightening the lockring against it. As you are tightening, make sure the axle still spins freely with no play.

If you can’t get the axle to spin freely without catching, then it’s possible you smashed a bearing and have to replace some or all of them.

  3. YOu have to grab both sides with your fingers and give it a spin. YOu dont want it too tight. It should move freely and slowly come to a stop. Its takes time to play with this type of adjustment. If you really want put some gloves on and completly remove the axle, etc and give it a good cleaning and relube with grease (bearings/race). Just note before you do this how much (in mm) the axle sticks out on each side from the nut. I learned the hard way to not measure and when I put back the wheel was not totally centered. good luck.

You have at least one cone wrench, so I’m going to assume you have another. Just spend 2 minutes “taking it all apart.”

There’s clearly some fuckery going on inside. And there is absolutely no way to unfuck it without taking it apart.

Also, that axle should turn smoothly using just finger pressure. If you need a wrench to turn it, it is magnitudes too tight.

  5. I am thinking broken bearing balls, or shrapnel inside the bearing. You will need to take the hub apart and see.
