Hi all – I got a used Axiom Streamliner Road rack and am trying to install it on my bike. My bike's dropouts have this sort of mini "hood" that makes where the skewer sticks out not completely flush so the rack cannot sit as it should in the first picture (from the Axiom website).

My idea was to get a longer skewer and two spacers which I'd put on the outside of the dropout (represented by the red in the second picture) so that the rack's holes (represented by the blue) has a flush surface to sit against once it goes on the skewer. Then the cap (represented by the mustard) can be screwed back on and everything's dandy. This drawing is not to scale or accurate or good.

Is this a horrible idea? Will I die? Is there any alternative? I've already taken every relevant measurement I can think of consistently. Thanks!

I actually owned one of these years ago. I don’t remember if I put it on a bike but as I recall the rack is supported by the skewer not the axle. Is that correct? If so you don’t need to change your axle. You just need the spacers to move the skewer a bit further out. Does it come with a skewer? The main issue with your plan is that the axle might bend due to the placement of the load. I don’t know that you have a choice but this would be a good place for a set of custom plates that dogleg around the dropout shape.
