Hi everyone, I inherited this old bicycle from my grandfather and I’m trying to learn more about it. I know the brand is Rivel Surhuisterveen (it’s written on the bike), but that’s all the information I have.

Despite being in quite rusty condition, I can’t find any similar bicycles online – no photos, catalogs, or clear references from this brand’s older models.

I’ve added some photos. If anyone recognizes it or knows:

  • the approximate year or era,
  • the model,
  • or has seen original photos or catalogs of similar Rivel bikes

I’d really appreciate your help. Thanks!

  1. Clean the fuck out of it. Really go to town. Then check all the tubing for cracks or holes / soft rust spots.

If there isn’t any, then you have a cool sentimental frame to begin working from if you want to build a bike.

Outside of that it isn’t worth anything, that era of humanity used to pump bikes out. Most shops, clubs, sportsmen, etc, had their own frames getting built

I have so many frames that Google doesn’t recognise but they clearly exist, right in front of me . .

Looking at this frame, I’d say it isn’t worth much investment, maybe a single speed townie if you want to spend $400-$600 on it. But I personally wouldn’t
