I plan to take it to the shop to get a professional opinion but they are closed today and I just want to have some idea since I just got this bike! Is it obviously toast?

Just noticed these flaps coming off of the bike under the bottom bracket/down tube. I can’t tell if it’s paint, if it’s paint and a layer of carbon fiber, or if it’s delamination (don’t know if that even applies here).

Definitely looks like the top layers of carbon delaminated. Bottom brackets are usually made very strong so I wouldn’t be too concerned if that’s all of the damage.

Best option is getting it repaired by a carbon repair shop. It’s not cheap but it is cheaper than a new frame.

Use a properly adjusted chain catcher on the front chain rings to stop the chain from dropping into the frame next time.

  2. A carbon repair shop will give you a better opinion, but looks like chain damage to me, nothing dramatic. Also, I’d recommend buying a chain catcher to avoid damage like this in the future.
