Tucked in the aero bars at 43km/h, hit a pothole, and went straight into a signpost.

I was unconscious for a bit and the helmet broke in two, but I walked away with zero broken bones. Scans and MRIs all clear, and I’m finally back riding after 6 weeks off.

Attached is the setup/helmet I was wearing. Don't skip the lid.

Bike is fine.

I’m glad you’re ok but I’ve got to hear more about the context of the last photo. Did you come to and tell them you need a photo for Strava/Reddit?

Congratulations on the quick recovery. And no broken bones.
And most of all the not broken head!

I heat you should replace your helmet every few years regardless of wear. Makes sense to me since they require the same thing of safety helmets (hardhats) in construction.

But I’m glad that 8 year old one was still good enough. I kinda wonder if it would’ve broken in half if it’d been newer.

  3. Glad to hear you are OK, and are recovering. Hope you get a lot of riding in this year.

Gotta love that you ended your story with “Bike is fine”. I feel ya!

Man, you look like me when I crash 9 years ago. Same single blood spot eye too.

    Glad you’re okay.

  7. I will never understand people riding without a helmet. It’s such a minor thing to put on.

  8. In 1976, I was in my top gear looking at my rear derailleur and cassette when I hit the rear bumper of a parked car. I was able to order a replacement for the crushed styrofoam liner for my Bell helmet back then. The shells on helmets were that thick. I have wondered whether modern helmet.could protect on an impact on something with a smaller diameter. I am so glad you are OK.
