Watch this video to prevent the same mistake I made – my Mauser 98 bolt got stuck because I removed the claw extractor and then foolishly put the bolt in. Never do this! Of course, the Mauser 98 is fabulous but if you make this mistake you will have a major problem to deal with. For more on the Mauser 98 and other Mausers, check out this full length video:

  1. I picked up a custom 98 sporter with premium barrel… beautiful rifle… problem with it is whomever commissioned the job chose 30 30 Win and not even 30 30 AI at that. Still rolling my eyes on that one, but for five bills it was a neat addition and who knows someday I may get it out of the safe and tinker with it.

  2. As someone who has a 03-Springfield I definitely understand why this would be a problem.. I usually don’t have this issue. Usually I have issues spinning the extractor to right position on the bolt assembly before putting the bolt assembly back in..

  3. I had a G98 Mauser and showed it to a friend. The POS threw away my claw extractor. He knew what he was doing. Oh, well, since then his life has gone downhill.

  4. Tengo un mauser 98 fabricado en 1910. No tienes porque hacer eso. Sacar el extractor, dejarlo afuera y colocar nuevamente el cerrojo, es absolutamente innecesario, impractico, no sirve para ningún propósito.

  5. Thanks, but it's a little late. Hahaha. I already did it when I was a kid with my dad's rifle, and I couldn't get the bolt out of the action until I got hold of a pair of long, needle-nose pliers that luckily were lying at the bottom of the tool drawer. I squeezed the ring fins together, and woohoo! It came out.

  7. I have a suggestion. I have a friend who is an awesome mechanic. To get bearings off that were tightly compressed on to a steel shaft, and put them in his oven at 350 degrees and remove the bearings with ease. He said that it works without disrupting the metal memory. I could see this process possibly working for removing, and replacing that ring. Be sure to wear welding gloves when doing this. 😂

  8. that easy you put a drop of super glue and close te ring asap the bolt if off the receiver just heat slightly with a propane torch at 150 deg and you liberate the ring

  9. This happened to me recently.

I have my WW2 reenactment group, we portray the Germans, and we were at an event in Poland this past September. We are handed our rifles and I have my guys do a field strip and clean them (make sure they're giving us decent stuff and make sure it's going to run well).

As I'm helping one of the guys I take off the extractor and without thinking stick the bolt back into the action. VERY stressful 10 minutes of aggressive monkey-brain gunsmithing followed.

Thankfully one of my lads is essentially god but for weapons and he figured it out with a couple of screwdrivers and a couple of hands to assist. I could have kissed the man.

It is possible to clear that jam in the field but it is NOT fast, fun or easy.

  10. usually just squeese the trigger and the bolt should slide or press /pull the side mounted tab mine has a scope that blocks the bolt insertion so i have taken it out a couple of times

  11. So the the flaw you found is only present when you deliberatly remove a rather larger pice of Metal from the gun itself… Ok… Noted…

I mean in wartime, when parts are hard to come by and you whould rather have essentially a single Shot Rifle rather than No Rifle at all, i See why this could be a Problem but i whould guess that every gun Has a Part, that while Not needed for Base functionality, will still jam the gun If Not present…

  12. Shouldn't need to remove the claw extraction. Other than to clean or replacing of it. Forgetfulness dose happen I guess. Thats nothing against the mauser action though. Even if there are better updates and brands out there. Take parts off any of them and it will fail or have problems of some degree. Good warning though of don't ever do or you'll regret it.
