Ive managed to land reasonable shots on a man sized and deer sized target at 450 yards with a bolt action savage 3030 and handloaded 150gr spitzer boat tail rounds but thats really pushing the limit of its performance envelope.
Man the fancy ammo was a 4inch drop at 200ish yards… It's a great gun for sure. I don't know about 400 though. Maybe you're just a great shot. I still wouldn't bet my life or something I am hunting on it though.
"Easy hits to 400 yds" misses half SEE NOT EASY! lol, j/k. good shooting, considering ht sighting system. Good spotting does help, too. I got nothing but respect for the 30-30 and a good lever gun, even if I am more a dread Marlin guy. Never used mine for comp really though, so a Marlin 1894p (44 mag) with 70s era Weaver fixed 4, was my perfect woods deer/pig rifle. But were I shooting comp? Would def go Winchester. 1876 Centennial with the full length "musket" stock is my grail lever gun.
Over the last 10 years, ive done quite a bit of work with Marlins and winchesters in 30-30. They are damn fine rifles, most peo p le just do not spend the effort to really learn to use it, as these days they default to an AR. The sights on the older models are often better- finer, obscure less of the target. Modern sights tend to be chunky- as its sn assumption that some type of optic is in the cards. An old 94 and a pocket full of shells combined with mobility, terrain and marksmanship can still ruin your day.
I've hunted with the .30-30 for over 40 years and I've been telling a lot of people that it will work out to 200-250 yards and with very little adjustment by doing a few drills out on the range to get them to figure out the holdover.
The .30-30 is a ballistic twin of the 7.62×39 (AK-47), .30 caliber with the same bullet weight and velocity. The effective range of the 7.62 is 350 meters (383 yards), so yeah even with the round nose of a .30-30 it comes close to matching the 762×39 at medium ranges.
The trouble with today’s shooters is that they want to purchase the ability to make a 400 yard shot. With the modern flat shooting cartridges and fancy optics that’s possible. But if a person is willing to truly learn how to use their rifle, the older iron sighted rifles are capable of hunting accuracy at longer ranges, but you have to be willing to make the effort to truly learn how to use the rifle.
Teddy Roosevelt said it was a good antilope rifle good to 600yards , of course after shooting black powder rifles I can see how it seems much flatter shooting.
It's sad that so many shooters have become so dependent on modern gear and accessories as opposed to building a strong foundation on the basic fundamentals of marksmanship.
But but but…NOoooooo! Now that means the new “Wiz Bang” AR rounds aren’t as cool in the hands of people that think they are sharp shooter prodigies while never actually shooting their new rifle because the ammo costs so much. 😂
You know, if this country banned all semi auto guns in the hands of civilians, i think the gun community could do well with lever action rifles. That is outstanding Karl!!!
BTW, there are online ballistic charts you can print out, for any caliber. They give drop for any given range, so you know what to expect (in theory!).
The main reason any invaders are severely screwed. 30-30 winchester. Millions of people have em and a LOT of country boys are good with em. But I do love my Ruger AR-556.

Wiped the dust off mine yesterday, it’s a made in 73 gun but still a good gun.
I’ve always found it strange that lever calibers go from pretty much 30-30 then jump to 45-70. This explains a lot though.

Your eyes are MUCH better than mine! LOL
About 10,000 old or now dead men would all agree with you.
9-Hole Reviews when?
"300." "350." "400." "450."……"1500". 🤣

Continued excellence from Karl. This is a person who represents the perceived weak.

Good info I really dislike how much hate the 30-30 has gotten over the years. Glad to see some people still giving it love

Good job. I couldnt do better.
You've prolly seen the video, but i watched a video by "the real gunsmith" talking about 7 mil Remington
In essence, he said "if you can't get within 250 yards/feet of a elk your a shitty hunter and should probably stop"
get a shave

My Grandfather was taking giant Mule Deer at 150 yards with his ancient 26 inch barrel .30-30 way back in the 1960's.
Ah yes the lever action doppelgänger to 7.62×39 (ballistically speaking).

Gotta love og 30-30s . That’s very impressive aim with iron sights. I could uses some tips.
