Replace both, it really isnt that expensive, and available by foot at your nearest home depot/bike store (i’d prefer the latter)

It’s the internals of the housing that you can see, but the cable is probably in very bad shape, too. Both need to be replaced

No your housing has blown through the ferrule and gotten messed up. The cable probably has a nice bend in it right there though.
New cable and housing(plus ferrules) will fix this. You can try to get a metal ferrule that will prevent this or put more length in the housing if it’s being bent too tightly where it exits the derailleur

Yup, metal ferrules, new cable, probably a longer piece of housing.
Either somebody shifted into a smaller sprocket while there was enough slack in the cable for the ferrule to leave the barrel adjuster and the sharp ends of the housing wires pushed through the plastic ferrule. Then they kept riding and shifting.
Or the housing was cut too short so that at some point in the derailleur stroke the housing/ferrule pops out of the barrel adjuster and at some point was caught while shifting into a smaller cog…

The linear strands are the steel housing wires. That whole thing is about to explode.

Cable ferrule completely failed, probably because the housing was cut a tad too short causing the cable to bend at a weird angle which caused it to snag the ferrule. Just replace both; if you’re not running full housing, that section of cable housing is super short and some shops may even just give you a free piece of spare cable housing.

Yea thats fkd, but for complete understanding its recommended to take picture of how the cable is routed. Imo it was either too short, or routed incorrectly. There should not be any sharp angles, worst case scenario the cable should not exceed a “C” profile.

Already been said, but just reiterating that you do NOT need to replace the housing..
Super highly doubtful that your housing will be too short just by trimming 5mm off from the frayed end.
Just run a new cable thru the housing.
Get a 4mm alloy ferrule if possible, otherwise just stick with a new plastic ferrule.

Remove cable, trim the housing end with a diagonal and then supply a new ferrule and you’ll be back in business.

No, those are the threads from the shift housing.
Replace your housing annually friends.
