I recently got some new brakes and wanted to try install them myself. Is this a temporary end cap on the brake hose or is it a pre-installed hose connector? It seems to be a wax/silicone covering over the hole to keep the oil inside, I am worried about that breaking off and going inside the hose if I connect it like this.

They are the Shimano BR-M9220 if that provides any additional context

  1. That’s a temporary cap to keep the mineral oil in. You want to have the olive and nut already on the hose behind the barb, which it seems you’ve already installed. (If you don’t have those on the hose already, you may have to cut the hose and try again.)

You then screw the nut onto the lever (without that cap, behind which there will be threads).

  2. That’s a normal barb on that hose, but you have to break the seal with a pick before you put it in. It’s meant to break itself but it doesn’t always do I normally poke it. If the hair length is fine you can go straight in with that one or otherwise cut it and put a new one. There will be an olive in the lever already too
