How do I remove these pieces (see 1st & 2nd pic) from my down tube? They’re blocking my new down tube cable stoppers (see 3rd & 4th pic) from sitting correctly so they twist from the shift cable tension no matter how tight they’re screwed on. Weather is shit where I’m at right now so I couldn’t bring the bike itself over, but my LBS mechanic said they should be able to come out and I forgot to ask how.

Update: Solved! They were both just gunked on. One slid off super easy and the other was a little more resistant, but they’re off. Thanks, everyone.

  1. Jumpy-Birthday8446 on

I don’t see any 3rd and 4th pics, but these shifter bosses are normally brazed on so removal would be quite a drastic move.

That said, there does seem to be what perhaps looks like a circlip involved here, so something may be doable.

  2. They just get a bit stuck with time. There’s nothing physically holding it on there, so just tap it gently with a little hammer and punch or the handle of a screwdriver and it’ll pop off.

  3. Needle nose pliers it will likely mare them but the are readily available online when I install needle ones I coat the boss in grease it seems to help but it’s just something that happens quite often they are usually made out if plastic too fyi
