Hello everyone ^
Ive been restoring my childhood dirt jumper, i had previously an 8 speed cassette/chain that worked just fine with a Bmx front sprocket.
I had bought (with no previous research) a 9 speed cassette/chain.
My questions are:
Can i run an 8 speed chain on my new 9 speed cassette?
Or should i break the bank and order new 8speed cassette/ chain?
And if there are other options?
Thanks in advance :)))

  1. Your chainring looks like your limiting factor here… Even the 8 speed chain doesn’t look seated on it. Is that chainring made for 1/8″ chains? You’ll need one that can work with 3/32 chains to run up to an 8 speed chain.

The 9 speed chain is completely out of the question.

  2. I guess you used to have a thin steel chainring so it worked ok enough with the chain, you should try to find a bmx chainring for a 3/38 chain or just buy
single speed cassette spacers and a 1/8 single speed chain

Definitely can’t use a 9 speed chain on that chainring first off. You *might* be able to use the 9sp cassette with your 8 speed derailleur/shifter and an 8sp chain but to do this you’ll need to lock out the smallest gear on the cassette with the derailleur adjustment screws and turn it into an 8sp cassette basically

You need a 3/32″ sprocket. You can probably find a narrow-wide one which will be less likely to drop the chain.
