Final update on my Trek 4500 β†’ gravel conversion.

πŸ”§ Current setup
β€’ Drivetrain: Shimano Deore 2Γ—10
β€’ Brakes: ZTTO hydraulic disc brakes
β€’ Wheels: 700c rims, 18mm internal width
β€’ Tires: 700Γ—45mm
β€’ Handlebar: Corner Bar
β€’ Seatpost: Carbon seatpost

Almost all components were sourced from AliExpress, so this has been a very budget-focused build.

Overall, the bike is finally rideable and feels fast and fun, but a few things still need refinement.

πŸ€” Wheel & tire thoughts

The current 700Γ—18mm internal width rims feel a bit narrow for 700Γ—45mm tires.
I’m considering:
β€’ Switching to 700Γ—21 or 700Γ—22mm internal width rims
β€’ Or possibly going 650b, depending on clearance and ride feel

Not fully decided yet.

⚠️ Issues I’m dealing with

  1. Handlebar slipping downward
When I put pressure on the bars, they rotate downward slightly, even though all bolts are tightened.
    I suspect I need:
β€’ Assembly paste to increase friction, or
    β€’ A different clamp setup

  2. Stem length
The stem is 110mm, which might be a bit long.
I’m considering switching to a shorter stem, but I’m still testing before deciding.

  3. Carbon seatpost movement
The carbon seatpost doesn’t slide up or down, but it moves slightly side to side.
Since it’s my first carbon component, I’m being cautious β€” I don’t want to overtighten and crack it.
I’ll likely use carbon assembly paste and a torque wrench.

  4. Front derailleur exposure
When riding in rain or snow, water gets thrown directly onto the front derailleur (2x setup).
Still looking for a good solution β€” maybe a small guard, better fender placement, or some kind of deflector.

🧠 Final thoughts

This was a budget, learning-focused project, not a perfect or high-end gravel build β€” and I’m honestly happy with how it turned out.
Turning an old, free MTB into something usable and fun using mostly AliExpress parts has been super rewarding.

If anyone has experience with:
β€’ Wide tires on narrow rims
β€’ Corner Bar setups
β€’ Carbon seatpost issues
β€’ DIY splash protection for front derailleurs

…I’d love to hear your advice. Thanks for following the project! πŸ™ŒπŸš΄β€β™‚οΈ

  1. Use paragraphs, bro.

That stem gives me fear. May I suggest measuring it and getting a rigid stem (heh!) for….. Less chances of catastrophic failure on bumpy terrain?
