“I saw [Jonas Deichmann](https://youtu.be/ChKSzzH7-Rk) did it in 97 days, and I know I won’t be anywhere near that. I’ve heard of a few people doing it or planning to do it in 18 months.”

“If you’re in good shape, finishing the whole ride in 9 months is very reasonable. To do that, start in early December (beginning of summer), finish in late August (end of summer).”

And a note: competition cycling is quite different from bike-touring… You’re basically living on the go, so will have to find sleeping places, food, the route etc. Yes, it helps to improve your daily cycling distance, but don’t underestimate the “stuff around the cycling” :-).

  2. Significant sections through Yukon Territory and Eastern Alaska will be gravel for considerable stretches, and I imagine it will be similar through many parts of South and Central America.

  3. Is there a particular reason you’re choosing that direction? The overwhelming majority of people start in Alaska and finish in Ushuaia due to the direction of the prevailing winds.

Most folks take at least a year if not two for this ride. I’m a fast, strong former road racer and I rode the route from my home in Portland, Oregon to Ushuaia in 13 months – but I was riding some dirt sections along the way and exploring a lot too. My pace was much quicker than the vast majority of other cyclists I met along the way. For most, myself included, the goal isn’t to ride the route as quickly as possible.
