My wife was kind to let me build a bike for her. Thats the most fun part. Bought this Miyata for 30€ and tried to keep the price down on the rest of the parts. Total maybe 300€ Had to disassemble the wheels down to the spokes to get a good clean, polished and learn how to lace a wheel from the ground up. Only thing missing is mudguards, gladly receiving tips, if it fits a two legged kickstand, and a child seat.

  1. For an inexpensive improvement, I’d recommend a smaller chainring. Assuming it has to be 5 hole your lower limit is probably 39t (I think?) and I’d go about there. 39:11 is still over 45kph before you spin out, and the low end is much more likely to be useful.

I have loved Velo Orange metal mudguards, but they aren’t the cheapest. Whatever you get, don’t skimp on length – the longer the better. Plus a front flap.

  2. Brooo a lugged step through frame, that is not a common sight. What an awesome bike, your wife is a lucky lady!

The only changes I’d maybe consider are upgrading the pedals, I like Spanks Oozys with the pegs ground off halfway but whatever suits your fancy. Also, I would probably swap the stem for more rise or just a cleaner quill stem. Mostly personal preference

Anyways, great bike and nice job on the build
