How Much Do Oil Rig Workers Make?

I’m sure you’ve all seen the crazy videos of offshore oil or gas rigs, where the sea looks like it’s trying to eat everything and everyone.

These videos are true to life with 108 deaths on oil rigs each year, so you would hope they’re compensated for this danger.

Well a recent ad to work as an offshore rigger in the North Sea advertised a £365 a day basic rate of pay for a 12 hour shift. However, the kicker is you can work whenever you like and choose to stay on the rig for 1 to 6 months.

This means if you decided to do two 6 month stints you would earn around £95,420 a year

how much do oil rig workers get paid and is the job really that dangerous yes yes it is I’m sure you’ve all seen the crazy videos of offshore oil rigs getting swallowed by the Sea and although not a daily occurrence they’re true to life on average over 100 of them die each year that’s 25 deaths per 100,000 employees and that’s just fatality it doesn’t include injuries however ironically the largest cause of death for oil rig workers is when they’re not on the oil rig at all instead of whopping 40% of fatalities come from transportation usually via helicopter with the second highest cause of death being getting hit or crushed by objects and the third being fires or explosions so one would hope they’re reasonably compensated for this danger and they kind of are the recent ad to work as an offshore rigger in the North Sea advertised a 367 basic rate of pay for a 12-hour Shi you also get to choose how long you want to work for from a minimum of 1 month on the oil rig to a maximum of six this means if you did two six-month stints you’d be on a salary of 95,4 120 a year

  2. most oil commons would rather get cheap labour from third world countries, they see their life as less valuable too. I don't know who is to blame, the company that is exploiting them or the people who let big companies get away with taking advantage of them due them not having any dignity.

  3. Don't know what going rate is anymore, just know I won't go back out till it increases.
Think it's been stuck on same amount for about 10 years and onshore jobs have caught up

  4. In reality you work shifts 2 on 3 off or 3 on 3 off are the genrally normal shifts, pay per annum varies hugely from around £45k a year up to around £90k a year for normal hands, management get more. However fatalities do happen but are very rare in the UK sector. There is sadly the odd one or two. Pay these years is poor and hampered by high government taxes placed upon companies who now pay 78% tax

  5. I'm not saying 95,000 pound a year (roughly 126,000 usd) isn't a lot of money, it is, but for a job where I have that high of a risk of dying and I need to work 12 straight months with no breaks in order to even make that much, that just doesnt seem worth it at all. Especially in the economy we're living in.
