Thanks for all the replies and advice on the cable end query – loads of great suggestions.

Got this hybrid bike for a mate with 10 speed Ultegra 6600 but has a 25 cassette which isn't ideal.

I think it will fit a 28t cassette?

Price of 10 speed medium and long cage is very high now. Have rear that Shimano 9 speed MTB rear mechs will work.

I have this 9 speed Sora that I bought years ago – will it work with 10 speed and 32t cassette?

Cheers

The shift ratio is the same for those two mechs and it will work fine with a 32t cassette

Whatever you do, don’t try and fit a 4700 Tiagra rear mech, it has a different shift ratio and is not backwards compatible with older 10x anything. The Sora will work fine

Yes, as long as the capacity of the sora mech is not exceeded i.e. total teeth difference between small/small and big/big. (edit – capacity for the sora mech is 43t difference so no problem there). In terms of pull ratios Shimano road 9/10 speed are cross compatible, the exception being 10sp Tiagra which uses a different pull ratio. Shimano MTB 9 speed mech is also compatible, but not MTB 10 speed as again, that operates on a different pull ratio.

    Think I’ve got the answer.

Was a very specific question so was confusing when people were adamant that this specific 9/10 speed query wouldn’t work.

It wasn’t saying are 10 and 11 speed mechs interchangeable.

Cable actuation works on this set up. Can put a 9 speed mech on for bigger range with 10 speed road gear set – Shimano specific

    Thanks 👍
