Last week I found out that Sturmy archer 3 speed hubs can nowadays be had with disc brake mounts and A FULL F*CKING CASSETTE FREEHUB???

So of course since I was looking for the most efficient and reliable gearing solution for my belt drive disc brake daily driver without selling a kidney, I absolutely had to get one! My current setup uses a Shimano HG mounted rear belt pulley so I can build a wheel and drop this in without having to replace the expensive belt or pulley!

And when it's time for a bike holiday in the summer, I can switch out my belt drive for a 1×11 like I did before, but now with 679% gear range!

Are you posting this from the future?

I’ve got a triple chainring in the parts bin….

Give us a heads up how soon that gear range massacres the hub. That is  lot of extra torque it has to handle in the bigger cogs.
I am genuinely curious how that will hold up.

  3. I’ve have one of those on my old Bike Friday which I’ve had for nearly 20 years. Mine is a 3×7.

  4. These have been around for like 30 years, Sram had their Dualdrive when they still made IGHs, you usually don’t see them outside of recumbents/trikes where a front derailleur might not be an option.

On a regular bike these are heavy, expensive, and you can kill IGHs with too low of a gear the spec sheet should list a minimum gear ratio.

  5. Shimano currently has their nexus internal hubs with Di2 and disc brakes too I believe. things are getting crazy out here

  6. Can’t find the link in my limited time. But of course Sheldon Brown did this to one of his bikes for some crazy amount of available gears, I want to say 60+ gears, but I could be off.

Fun build. Though really I’d find that many gears really distracting. Most occasions I only use 3-5, which in part is why I love the Sturmey Archers 3 speed hubs, because There’s no doubting if you’re in your best gear.

  7. I’ve been a big fan of student archer since I found out about them late 80. They were on choppers before the change. Nowadays, they are a cheaper rohloff and easy to repair.
    Happy ridings!!

  8. For a little while there was a company that made Hub Motors with a 3 speed sturmey archer IGH slotted into the center of it, I always wanted one for a folding bike or cargo bike, but they haven’t been manufactured since like 2016 or something.
