The gap between the bearing cap and the upper bearing cup is smaller at the front than the rear. The bike is new, so I’ll be going back to the shop about this, but figured I’d check here for expert opinions too. The headset is smooth and there is no play. I’m mostly wondering if this is just an aesthetic issue or if it will lead to damaging the bearings or something.

  1. CK specifies that you need to face your head tube and crown steerer prior to installation. Potentially the paint on the steer tube is uneven causing the headset to stack unevenly.

This is a specialized service requiring expensive, specialized tools and experience. Not all shops do this, but all shop that sell CK should…

This should have been caught by the shop so they should just charge you for the facing service, not recharging for headset work.

Probably just needs a good bonk to settle it but if you just bought this and since it’s high-end I would visit the shop and show them

Unless there’s a frame issue, it’s just not enough pre-load to pull the seating surfaces into alignment. Could just tighten it up a bit more than necessary and back off a little bit.
