Was cleaning my road bike when I found this crack on the hub of my 2009 Zipp 404s. Not sure how severe this is ðŸ˜
Background: I bought these second-hand from someone who had them since new. He said that they’ve never been crashed but once had the chain go into the spokes (had to replace one of the spokes as a consequence). I’ve only been using them for two months, never having any problems or accidents until now that I’m seeing this splinter.
Is this safe to ride/would repairing be viable now? For context, I’m in the UK.

That huh is shot
Toast. I will pour one out for you.
It’s severe, the hub can not be repaired, and it is unsafe to ride in that on a low-spoke-count wheel like that, the odds of cascading failure are *relatively* high.

I’d get a new hub and re lace those.
i was like …. gears look fine, spokes look fine, hub is… oh no
Grab a pack of butter that one is toast
That hub has finished hubbing.
EDIT to add: Very odd to have the radial lacing on the drive side. Normally the cross pattern would be on the drive side to supply torque to the rim. That may have created extra stress.
No, you are lucky. Still alive after your hub is end of life, could have been both of you.
Hub is done. Others may disagree but I won’t radial lace any rear wheels I build. (Former mechanic who now just works on own/friends bikes) At the very least, consider why it’s an uncommon lacing before you get your next wheelset done.
Zipp again … Toast!
Whole wheel is trash.
time for a new hubby

I wouldn’t ride that down to my mailbox.
