L to R: My rear tyre from the rear and slightly to the side, then the other half's tyre from same angles.

My rear tyre is weirdly worn, both the pattern and how extreme the wear is. Both tyres pictured are Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres. Both have done the same distance; about 6k km, most of it on paved roads. We have the same set up. Between bike, bags and person, weights are pretty similar. We've both run SMP tyres for all our touring. The last couple of sets of tyres have gone 10k km at least without showing any serious wear.

I guess a bad batch or counterfeit might explain it. But does anyone have any other ideas on what could have caused this wear?

  1. 6k is pretty damned good. I expect to get about 3k out of a tire. I have had supple compound tires wear out in 1k, granted, thats a racing tire. You’re honestly wearing these tires far past where I would run them. The weird pattern seems to be the pattern of the tread unless I’m missing something. You get more wear in the center because thats where the tire makes contact with the ground.

The difference between your tire and your friend’s tire may be the compound. You may have a more supple type compound where he has a more durable compound.

  2. I had a lot of wear on my rear tyre when I first started commuting to work that was caused by the tyre rubbing on the rear mud guard. The spoke tension wasn’t correct and the wheel needed to be trued
