I have a 29×3 trek 1120 with the stock rigid front suspension, I want to put a suspension fork on the front. Will it be as easy as just replacing the fork with another or do I need to consider dimensions /ride angle?
Check the crown to axle length. The fork will be a little longer than the length you have currently with the rigid fork, but you want to account for ~25% sag.

That frame/fork is “suspension ready”
Just buy something with a similar axle to crown dimension and you should be good to go

Your current fork is 510mm in length. The suspension for equivalent is a 130mm fork with 25% sag.

You’re in for a disappointment if you want to turn this into a mountain bike. A good suspension fork will cost a lot, add significant weight, and take away your fork stashing points.
If it’s just about smoothing out the bumps a little, I’d recommend a suspension stem.

Should be able to do a Pike or a Manitou
