I found this looking for 5 speed cassette. It’s for my diy Bafang BBSHD. This is, I think 14-23. That gearing would be perfect I a 5 speed. Pretty sure I could get 3rd gear, center of cassette, to be in perfect alignment. Which, if I’m building a cassette, 3rd gear would be a 17t cog. But I digress…How does this free hub/ free wheel mount ? You see the splines for a free hub and threads for a free wheel…WTF.

  1. It is designed to be mounted to a threaded hub. The splines are for the installation/removal tool to thread it on/off the hub.

That’s not a cassette, but rather a freewheel. It screws onto a hub using those threads. The splines are simply the tool interface.

  3. This is not a cassette. This is a freewheel that is screwed onto the hub. A cassette uses splines and a lockring. The splines that you see are only for the tool to lock into and allow you to screw it on or off and do not interact with the hub.

Thanks everyone. I never serviced a freewheel until just lately. I did my granddaughter’s. No special tools required. Just a few nuts.
So do they make freewheel hubs that accept a gear cluster and are sturdy enough for a Bafang e-bike ?

After the freewheel threads on, if you ever need to remove it you’ll need to clamp the splined removal tool in a vise and insert the freewheel over it and use the wheel for leverage to twist the freewheel off. Once mounted they are pretty tight.
