I use a win short mag myself
300 winmag usually only bores a small hole through them inside 100. It’s overkill for sure but if you don’t have a bunch of rifles then it is a solid choice for its versatility.

I've owned both. I actually prefer the 338 over the 300. And I only use it when I'm up in Alaska. Or having shooting competitions with my friends. I sold my 300 win mag and kept the 338. I love my own rounds. I found the best one as a 225 grain bullet gives me the best performance at long range.

Saw a guy at the processor today as he dropped off a nice 8 point. He shot it with a 270 150gr sp at 25 yds. There was literally nothing left of the front right leg below the shoulder joint. He lost about 5lbs of meat just from the carnage. I can’t imagine a win mag in that scenario
Except for a 300 Magnum will not do that to a deer just put a hole in them

At 100 yd or less , my Browning A-Bolt .300 sent all 4 rounds right through a buck , back about 25 years ago , he did finally die but might be a little overkill or over penetrating round for anything less than 200-300 yd . We’ve dropped em w a .300 out past 650 yd without it making a double sided Swiss cheese

Shot a 300 lb black bear at about 80 yrds with 300 win mag and uplifted the bear off the ground and the bear raggdolled spread eagle 1 1/2 times and killed it.Shot a bullelk with in 100yrds with 300 win mag and flipped it on it's back, that is the kind of kill force you are dealing with when it comes to the 300 Win magnum rifle. 🫣
I’ve shot plenty deer with a 300WM. I hand load some 165gr Nosler Accubond’s and it’s never destroyed my deer. Never had to track a deer with it neither.
After years of using one, i turned bitch and went with a lighter recoil weatherby mag.

You hunt enough for meat you learn it’s not the caliber as much as the bullet design and structure. I live near Glacier park Montana and carry a Winchester featherweight 300 Winchester mag and hunted several wilderness areas all have Grizzly bears. Filled the freezer for over 50 years it never let me down.
