2023 3×7 Shimano atlas Norco storm hardtail, kms 7 speed chain, probably less that 250 miles on it in total (specifically the cassette)

Out on the trail my chain broke, replaced and sized the chain but ever since replacing it the rear derailleur is catching and jumping when pedaling under load.

  • Does not happen on the stand, only under load and usually when the pedal stroke is around 1-2 o clock (both sides)
  • It does not happen at only a specific spot on the chain, I have been unable to find a stiff link of any sort.
  • I have indexed the gears, it is not that
  • Again, the cassette has less than 250 miles on it. I really don't think it is a worn cassette.
  • I adjusted the derailluer hanger, it is in alignment.
  • Everything has been cleaned and lubed, but it is most prominent in the middle gears on the cassette though it seems to happen on all gears

I'm wondering if the rear derailleur itself is actually bent, I'm pretty stumped at this point

  1. Does it only happen on this trainer? I had the same trainer and the way it compresses the quick release can flex the hanger a little bit. Otherwise, your derailleur may be bent. Lots of things can happen when you snap a chain and bending the derailleur cage is not uncommon when you snap a chain.

Lastly, if you’re actually riding this bike on a trainer, get a trainer tire. The knobby tire is going to wear out so fast on the trainer.
