I had yesterday a hill climb tour with my direct drive trainer and I broke my rear derailleur while I was shifting. I don't kow how that exactly happend.
Do you guys have some tips to prevent that and do you know why this happened βοΈ
I ordered today a new one and be excited because it is the first time that I change a rear derailleur π.

You did not break the derailleur but the hanger.Β
If you can, set your trainer to ERG mode.
Thatβs the derailleur hanger. Itβs a different part so I hope you ordered the right thing as your rear derailleur is fine.
The part that broke is supposed to break to prevent damaging the frame or derailleur. Hangers are like $20 and meant to be replaced easily.
How do you break a derailleur hanger on a trainer?
Correct chain length?
My guess is you were in your lowest gear, cranking it hard up hill, your chain goes over the lowest gear, luckily there are no spokes to snag on but something on your derailleur snags on the cassette can causes it to twist counter clockwise and snap off. Solution: adjust your limit screws and shifting when you put your bike on your trainer. The position of your cassette might be a little different from your bike.
