Looking to make a couple upgrades to my trusty FX3 Gen4 over the winter while I impatiently wait for the ice to go away so I can get out and ride again. I know the FX3 isn’t any top of the line road bike by any means so it might be a bit silly to be upgrading components on it instead of just saving up for a new bike, but I love the FX and plan to ride it for a long while to get myself into real cycling shape before I spring for a big boy road bike.
I don’t know how to tell whether or not certain parts are compatible with my bike or not. Would these Superteam wheels work on my bike just plug and play? Or would there be adapters/conversions/whatever else required to make it work? The listing says they fit Shimano/Sram 8/9/10/11 speed and the FX is a Shimano 10 speed – does that mean these would work?
Also I recently swapped out the stock FX tires for some 40mm Gravelking X1s. The listing for these Superteam wheels says the recommended tire size is 28-32, does that mean tires larger than 32 won’t work?
Sorry for all the beginner questions!!

Need to look at their Gravel Classic line. They are wider and made for your sized tires.
The freewheel will work, but I believe you need wheels set up with QR hubs
Fx3 is An awesome bike but not sure it’s worth a wheel upgrade unless. Save the $ for a road bike. Sounds like you are ready and you’ll need some accessories.
As someone mentioned, these wheels will not work. You need to look for wheels that have Quick Release hubs. You can find a list of specs for your bike here: [FX 3 Gen 4 – Trek Bikes](https://www.trekbikes.com/us/en_US/bikes/hybrid-bikes/active-fitness-bikes/fx/fx-3-gen-4/p/5293089/)
From that page, your bike uses the following:
* Hub front: Formula DC-20, alloy, 6-bolt, 100x5mm
* Skewer front: 139x5mm bolt-on
* Hub rear: Formula DC-22, alloy, 6-bolt, Shimano 8/9/10 freehub, 135x5mm
* Skewer rear: [152x5mm QR](https://www.trekbikes.com/us/en_US/p/W285123)
Look for wheels that support those specs.
I loved my old FX – it’s a great bike, so if you love it and it makes you happy, then upgrade it and enjoy it until you are sure you want to drop thousands for a new bike. If you get carbon wheels, keep your old ones and if you decide to sell the FX one day, you can put the old wheels back on, and use the carbon ones on a new bike (if it has QR dropouts), or sell them and get some of your money back.
If you feel the need to spend more money, consider adding a suspension seatpost from Redshift or Cane Creek. I have one of each on different bikes, and they are both excellent, and massively improve your ride comfort. Like the carbon wheels, the suspension seatpost can stay with you if you ever get a new bike. Good luck!
I love my FX3G4, but I wouldn’t spend money upgrading the wheels. The FX3 is meant more for comfort, and you’ve already done the right thing in getting better/wider tires. The next best improvement would be to get suspension seatpost like the Redshift or the Cane Creek eSilk. Maybe get an alt-handlebar that gives you more comfortable hand positions. I added innerbarends to mine, which really improved my comfort.
Even when you get a road bike, it’s good to have a FX3 as a complementary bike, which is tuned for maximum comfort. I like my FX3 for all of the situations where the road bike is too much hassle, I can ride it at a minute’s notice, don’t need to change outfits to special shoes/clothes just to ride around. I appreciate the more upright position when I just want to go cruising around the city. In fact, these days I spend more time on my FX3 than my carbon Domane
