Was reorganising my touring tool kit and thought I would share. I have recently done away with my multi tool because I realised that I didn’t need many of the features. Also the ergonomics can be challenging compared to stand alone tools.

My kit is divided between tire repair + spare parts in the toolbox bottle, and a few tools which I keep in a more accessible pocket of my frame bag. Pump and restrap light mount/hollowtech tool are attached to the frame.

Tool kit consists of:

2.5 to 6mm hex + 8mm hex bit. This covers every bolt on my bike. I removed the Phillips head screws from my FD and RD and replaced them with hex screws to eliminate the need for a Phillips screwdriver.

Knipex 86 04 100 mini wrench pliers. Amazing and compact tool with a ton of potential uses on and off the bike.

Unior 1669/4 emergency cassette lockring tool and spoke wrench. The one tool I hope to never use, but good to bring with.

Schrader to presta valve adapter. Can use this to pump tires at gas stations.

Park tool CT-5 mini chain tool. Another one that I hope to never use but wouldn’t travel without.

Victorinox Forester Swiss army knife. No real use for bike repairs but I thought to include it because it comes with on every tour. I really like this model because it has everything I need and nothing more.

CrankBrothers Klic HP pump. Really like this one because of the integrated pressure gauge.

Pedros Tire Levers. A bit bulky but they are the best tire levers.

Dynaplug tubeless repair kit.

My spare parts kit includes:

2x shift cables

An 11 link section of chain.

3x quicklink and 3x chain pins.

A few spare nuts and bolts.

2x tubes.

Some zip ties.

Total weight of the whole kit including the Swiss Army knife and bottle tool box is just over 1.1kg. I still need to add a few spare spokes to my kit. If I were doing an around the world trip I would probably also add some extra brake pads, discs + CL tool, and a chain. Any thing else that I am missing?

  1. Only things I can think of are a spare rear mech hanger (if your bike uses one) and maybe switching to TPU spare tubes to save more weight/space in the kit.

Have to say I’m very happy with my Topeak Hexus X though, only don’t use the torx bits regularly (although my brakes do have some torx bolts on them) and the only thing it doesn’t have is a quicklink tool (got a cheap wire one off ebay). The integrated tyre levers are really good and save space, plus make the tool feel nicer in the hand than sharp metal edges. I carry a Leatherman Squirt PS4 rather than a Swiss Army Knife normally.

What do you use as chain pliers?
You have something to unscrew valve cores?
I’d want to bring some chain lube and some sealant.

Not sure what the cassette tool is for.
