I’ve been advised that I should switch to hydraulic brakes, but it’s just not in the budget right now. Could I just buy the missing brake handle, and/or a replacement pair? Would any brake handle be compatible with the existing line?

The one that is there works, but I wouldn’t mind replacing it if it’s not too expensive.

I would really appreciate the assistance. Thank you!

  1. To answer your question: yes, a new brake lever is needed. If you can find the part number on the other one it could help you get something matching. Otherwise, most any flat bar cable brake lever should work; disc brakes need very little pull to grab.

Worth noting: your front brake is the more important and more powerful brake, so while not optimal, you can run with just a front brake, and many people choose to do so stylistically.

Any mechanical brake lever off amazon would work, or ask a local bike shop for one. Really easy to replace with a bit of patience to get it adjusted properly so the pull is right. Don’t buy hydraulic brakes for this bike, mechanical discs will be fine if they are in working order. Would take a shop like 20 minutes to set up if you dont want to DIY.

    A Shimano BR-MT201 is $38 on Jenson.

Else google a bike co-op near you and see if they’ve got a boneyard. If you’ve got questions bring a picture of the caliper as well as the one you posted. Ideally pull a model number off that brake caliper. Go there for in person for help and ideally bring the bike. You’ll likely pay more for getting it fixed or serviced at any shop than a a new hydraulic brake.

Don’t use SAE wrenches, use metric.
