Hello Reddit,

Can you help me source a new SQ taper BB with a shorter spindle to help with some chain line issues?

My prior cranks broke and seemed low quality so I bought these Soma new Albion cranks locally second hand.

I installed them and they sit a little too proud of the frame.

Bike: KHS Urban Xcape (year??)
BB frame width: 70mm
BB spindle width: ?? I can remove cranks to measure if needed.
Former Crank: Shimano FCTY501
Current Crank: Soma New Albion Triple

  1. Remove your bottom bracket, either measure it or look at the dimensions written on it and order something narrower from whatever local or distant retailer you prefer.

  2. Any place that sells square taper BBs will have spindles that are shorter than your current BB.

Also, there’s basically a 0% chance your BB shell is 70 mm wide.

From the Soma Fab site: • JIS square taper (113mm BB for a 47.5mm chainline. 110mm for a 45mm chainline)

I’m gonna guess 47.5mm chainline, but since it’s a hybrid they might have gone with 45mm. you could always put the old driveside crankarm back on, then measure horizontal distance from center of a bottle cage bolt on the seattube to the middle chainring.
