Out here in southern Chile testing out a new bike I bought last week. Spent 4 days on lots of rough unpaved roads and had this happen. Didn't see a soft patch coming down a hill which caught my front tire, turned it 90 degrees immediately and threw me off the bike and was sad to see the state of my tire. I'm a big guy and had a decent amount of weight in my bags which didn't help the situation.

Do you guys think I need wider tires or is this just a weak rim? New to rough road riding

I run Andra 40 rims on mine which are super strong. And the front is extra strong because it is only 20″ (rear is 29/700C).

Of course, you allowing the front wheel to turn 90 degrees obviously didn’t help. I don’t think any wheel will survive that if you’re heavy.

  2. Probably would have been fine wi5out the sand causing the abrupt 90° turn. A higher spoke count might have helped but the closer you run to the max rated system weight on any system, the less margin you have for the unexpected load. My condolences.

It’s the wheel that wasn’t up to it. A rim is only part of that.

Sounds like the kind of accident that would be a test for most wheels (when heavily loaded).

  4. I am sorry to see your rim warped over like that. I don’t have experience riding on though terrain but as a cargo bike rider.I’ve done some research and I am planning on making my customs heavy duty rims using SunRingle (Sun ringlé) brand rims with heavy gauge spoke (thicker diameter). It is suprising for me that the front wheel warped before the rear wheel since the rear wheel usually bears a heavier load than the front).
