Absolutely too tight. I usually look for around 1 inch of actual free play, not pushing on the chain just lifting it. Make sure to spin the cranks to find the tight and loose spots in your drivetrain so you can compensate. It is very rare even in high end cranksets/chainrings that they are 100% completely perfect in terms of warpage and diameter.

  2. Great trick to have great chain tension: flip bike upside down. Loosen both rear bolts. Pull the tire back and towards non-drive side, pull so the chain is tight and tire is touching the non-drive side chainstay. Tighten the non-drive side bolt. Now tighten the drive side bolt. Now loosen the non-drive side bolt. The tire should move into perfect alignment giving you optimal chain tension. Lastly don’t forget to tighten non-drive side bolt.
