Traveling for work & bought a new bike locally because it was a steal & happens to be within spitting distance of a popular starting point for the Oregon Coast ride.
Bike had been sitting for awhile so I decided to get it deep cleaned & get some parts installed so the bike would fit me for the 350+ miles I plan to ride it.
I haven't actually taken a bike to get serviced/cleaned by someone else in years as I prefer to do most things myself but is this standard for a Ti cycle with Gen 1 Di2 these days?
I mean for what I paid for the bike I'm not out too much total but this seems high no? Some friends said I probably got hit with the out-of-towner fee.

Can you work on your own bike?
That’s a lot yes!
Seems about right.
That’s about an hour’s work, two max so yeah, you got hosed.
Australian dollaridoos?
Totally depends on the market and the COL where the shop is located.
For reference, the shop I work at is in the highest COL city on the west coast. Our pro tune costs $540. To install a drop bar shifting, we are also going to get you for a shifter install, which is $50, and then we’ll get you for a bar tape install as well, which is $25. So, about on par with what you were charged here. Obviously, we skip the derailleur and brake adjustment because we are already doing that with the pro tune. But, minus a tune up, we’d be getting you for cable installs and adjustments as well.
Also for reference, a pro tune at my shop, aside form all the necessary adjustments, includes a very, *very* deep clean. We take the drivetrain apart, and get everything in the ultrasonic cleaner. We also pull the cranks, seat post, and drop the fork so we can deep clean everything, and re-grease all the solid works. That is what I would expect here.
Basically, a freshly assembled bike that is spotless and has had no stone unturned. Did that happen for you here?
This service would be about twice the price at my shop. $250 for a pro tune is fine.
Yes you did damn
Kind of. But not really imo. Deep cleans seem to be getting very expensive. If you just needed some truing and derailleur adjustment I’d just get that done. If they’re pulling everything apart, cleaning, lubing everything. Those services are expensive and often have an attached “fuck you” price. Cleaning and lubing anyone can do. Taking up their time is expensive.
My local bike shop in Germany takes around 60 to 70 bucks an hour. And they mostly charge less because they mostly do their work in under one hour.
You got ripped of mate. Totally.
At LBS where I am $250 CAD buys you basically a complete bike rebuild, All cables/housings replaced; drivetrain/frame stripped and cleaned, bearings redone. You have to pay for any parts on top obviously.
$400-$500 should buy you major suspension and part servicing on a full sus MTB.
yes i wouldve done it for 200
Sounds about right for a pro tune.
Probably not.
The shop likely gave you a quote, which you presumably wrote off on before they did the work. Looks like you signed off on the “pro” package and I’d assume there are lower tiers. Going on the description this bike was completely taken apart, components put through a parts washer and reassembled. This likely includes new cables and potentially housing. Also, you weren’t charged for the bars to be re-wrapped or for new cables. I’ll assume that was absorbed into the overhaul price.
You didn’t really tell us anything. Shit like this is why my shop does everything a’la carte and we don’t do these package deals. Maybe your bike was fine and they just wiped it off. Maybe it was a mess and someone spent all day on it. Regardless, you wrote off on getting the work done.
tune pro level in my country is about 250 as well. they basically remove every part and regrease and clean.
they seem to have taken the wheels true them that usually cost 20-30 per wheel
check on their website or pages how much is tha tune-pro if its also 250… then you paid the regular price.
so from my perspective is not overpriced. it is not because a qualified mecanic takes them 45 for a full drivetrain overhaul. you are not paying for his time but his experience and know how
Less than ten years ago, you could get a standard tune up for only $35
I don’t think you got taken at all. Having a shop do work is expensive.
I don’t pay for tune ups because a few hours of YouTube an through time you’ll learn how to take care of your bike and make fixes as problems occur
Honestly, I would have shat a brick if I saw that price. I took my bike in when I first started riding and it was $150 for a tuneup. I paid for the tuneup and started learning how to service my own bike. I even learned how to build my own bike from the frame up. Well worth the experience.
not taken this is reality when property increases 3x in ten years the price of service has to go up to cover higher rents.
Bike shop I worked at would never charge you differently as a tourist or local.
It depends how dirty the bike was and how untrue the wheel was. It does seem a bit steep.
If you made comments to the mechanic that you could do it better that costs a lot more extra.
I’ll never understand why people ask these questions *after* they pay and have the service done.
Here in New Hampshire, a full tune up/clean and degrease like that is usually around $200-$250USD. However, Di2 and e-bikes will usually entail an up charge. That’s how I priced my tune-ups anyway. Other shops will do hourly rates for certain services but most shops have a flat rate fee for full service like tune-ups. I’d say you you paid a reasonable price but it also depends on what it looks like before/after.
For a full service tune, cleaning, and 2 new tires? This is probably $50 less than it would cost at my LBS.
bike shops do cost a lot yes, that’s why I taught myself how to work on bikes, and also why I now work in a bike shop xd
$65 for a shifter install is crazy
Yeah just depends on the shop. We don’t charge for labor on parts if someone is getting a complete overhaul like that, but ymmv
This price seems completely reasonable. All the shops i have worked at would have charged more for these services
Yes but only because you paid a trained mechanic to do basic work. You can’t expect them to work for less just because its straight forward.
