Was given a Raleigh C30 that was wasting away outside. Stripped the frame down and would like to build up one of the ATB style bikes reminiscent of a Crust etc (swept back bars, largest tires I can fit, etc.

I’d like to source/utilize mid-quality used stuff. I’ll probably use the native fork and 700c wheelset to start. Would love to hear some thoughts/suggestions & see inspiration for similar builds. Feedback on things like V-brakes vs Cantis, BB/drivetrain options, quill vs 1-1/8 converter, specialty tools needed (have some, likely need others, like a set of cone wrenches).

I assume marketplace/eBay is gonna be my friend, but any offbeat online sourcesare also appreciated. I live in RI.

This bike has near zero value. Understand that what money you put into it will not add any value other than value to you.

Now that that’s out of the way. Make sure the bottom bracket can be removed and the seatpost can be removed.

If you have a bicycle co-op within a reasonable distance, go there and buy all your parts. Except bottom bracket and headset, buy these new.

Just remember, there is no added value for this bike once you add parts to it. Even if you spend as little at 150$ to 200$ USD this bike on a good day will be worth probably less than 100$.

Fun project. Good luck to you.

  2. If you have a bike co-op nearby it’s by far the best place for parts, 700c wheels aren’t worth it and quill stems look better on vintage bikes, the bike will never be worth what you have into it but it’s definitely rewarding and fun, just opinions of course
