Just got back from a pretty wet and muddy ride at kielder forest, turned the old bike upside down in an attempt to make some kind of attempt to clean the chain and chain rings with a bit of WD40 and a small plastic brush, and now there's this noise.

I'm around 60% sure it wasn't there before I started but who knows.

It sounds to me like there's grit in the bearings but I really hope not.

Anyone ever had this before?

Is the chain lubed after cleaning? This sound is quite normal for cleaned and non-lubed chains

That sounds like somethibg is worn out and the chain is kind of hitting the tips of the chainring before sliding down.. could be chain the cogs on the derailleur or the cassette itself, is this without lube now? If so lube it first before you start repairs, it might just solve it(for a while)..

Do any of your derailleur pulleys have alternating thick and thin teeth? Look at your front chainring to see what I mean by this. If so, your chain may be misplaced by one link, and the thicker pulley tooth is aligned with the narrower chain links.
